Last weekend saw the debut of Whip-Round Live, the first in our series of live events showcasing the best new alternative and post-punk bands around. The gig was a bona-fide hit with all four bands receiving a rapturous response from the capacity crowd. We dispatched our roving reporter Nat Wardle to fill you in on all the action.

Yasmin Coe was the first to take to the stage and already at 7pm the music hall was full with excited music fans and industry heads ready to see all the up and coming local acts. Usually known for her solo performances Yasmin has now stepped up her game with a full backing band complimenting her tunes. Self-described as a bisexual Leonard Cohan she really did step in to those shoes and had the audience mesmerised and hanging on to every word of the performance.

Next up was Slap Rash and they really did bring the rage and power to their performance. It was brutally intense stuff from brother and sister team Amelia and Hugh, a two-piece preaching sermons from behind a drum kit and a heavily distorted bass. They were a big hit in the mosh pit and we can’t wait to see what’s ahead for them in 2023.

With an excited crowd fuelled by Shindigger, Splint took to the stage and floored us from their very first riff. Having recently been snapped up by Nice Swan Records we totally get the buzz emerging from this supergroup including members from Blanketman, Working Mens Club and Julia Bardo. They have a Velvet Underground sound to them and didn’t fail to keep the audience captivated.

Finally, we had Nara closing out the evening in ecstatic style. With two members working at the venue as their day jobs this really was a special homecoming gig for them. To a jam packed room, the 4 piece delivered a spellbinding set that was met with demands for the first encore of the evening. We predict big things for Nara, their droney-distorted guitars hits the spot where bands like Just Mustard and Radiohead reach.

So there you have it, The first ever Whip-Round live all wrapped up. Mega thanks to all the bands and fans for bringing the energy,

Stay tuned for news on the next instalment coming very soon!
