The Death Set:

“Has the maximum-impact intensity of the young Henry Rollins in Black Flag or like an Iggy Pop for the era of samples and laptops. Worldwide is an extraordinary offering. The Death Set are a quixotic, perfect pop thrill.” The Guardian

“A relentless racket but of the highest order. Gleefully ballistic, a riot of chants, distortion and oddball samples.” Q

“Sublime pop-punk brevity from Baltimore” Sunday Times

“They make the Libertines look like Dire Straits… Original, entertaining and fun.” Vice

“The Death Set blast out of Baltimore, and onto your stereo, if your any fun.” Drowned in Sound

“Has the momentum to engulf dancefloors the world over.” Kruger “Quite literally a blast. A twenty first century update of hardcore. The Death Set blast through their material as if they can hear the police sirens in the distance coming to close their party down.” Clash

Derrida you can dance to. - The Onion (Austin).

“If the Cheerleading squad from a young offenders institute entered a beer bong-athon with Black Flag and Best Fwends, it’d still sound reserved compared to this lot.” NME

Australia to Baltimore transplants The Death Set are a faster, poppier, punker and more straight forward Devo for 21st attention spans. Their debut Ep “to” is the giddiest wall bouncing sugar over dose that’s come my way in some time – going down like a mix of three balloons full of nitrous and three more o’ helium. Sticky speedy spazzy songs defined by tuneful high-pitched screaming distorted guitars and casios blasting over rigid mechanical beats. It’ll make you jump up and down and pound your head against the wall – New York Night Train

“Loud, abrasive and sickly fun, Black Flag for a new generation ” Artrocker

School of Language

The Week That Was

Magic Arm

It’s been over a year since Field Music, a band specialising in meticulously assembled recordings packed with melodic twists and herky-jerky rhythms, said they were going to postpone band duties and ‘go and do some real work’.David Brewis re-emerged first as School Of Language, whose album ‘Sea From Shore’ was a triumphant attempt to ‘make the weirdness in my music more explicit so that reviews stopped saying we sounded like Maximo Park’.
Now his bandmate and older brother, Peter, has also recorded an album as The Week That Was, and the two acts play together at The Deaf Institute on August 14th.

What they say :::

School of Language -

“This is without doubt one of this year’s most innovative exciting and original albums with a vocal range that would make Freddie Mercury wince and an ear for harmony Brian Wilson would envy, this isn’t so much an album that breaks the mould but one that warps it indistinguishably…. An album, then, that will change your life”. NME

“As one third of Field Music, David Brewis makes chamber pop cut with polished ’70s rock and post-hardcore work outs. His own enterprise is both a very different kettle of carp and yet closely connected. Here he’s roped in two of the Futureheads, among others, for an experimental but avowedly goodtime romp that updates everyone from Badfinger to 10cc and Yes in one admirably, fizzily energetic sweep” Time Out

The Week That Was -

‘brainy, yet immensely gripping pop music’ uncut”genius” Mojo

“Field Music’s new film-noirish side project manages to be a whole lot better than, well, Field Music” NME

Magic Arm -

“a work of understated magnificence.” -Drowned in Sound

“Highlight of Glastonbury” Steve Lamacq“Irresistible summer hit.”

Imagine an insane birthday party with Sun City Girls, Keiji Haino and Mika Miko all invited, things are gonna go volcanic, and that’s where Nisennenmondai come in! Of all the noisy girl groups of Kansai, Tokyo, Nisennenmondai - their name translates as ‘Year 2000 problem’, a reference to the millenial computer bug - honestly! - are at once the most intense and hypnotic band to run out of the scene. Himeno Sayaka (drums), Zaikawa Yuri (bass) and Takada Masako (guitar) met, of all places, at the same after school music club at university in Tokyo and quickly jumped into band formation, self-releasing two EPs with short shrift before touring Japan alongside the likes of Death Sentence: Panda!, OOIOO, Lightning Bolt, Hella, Oshiri Penpenz, and Afrirampo. Their pulsing rhythm section and metallic overtoned guitar sound something like a heathen and tranced-out amalgamation of Boredoms, Neu!, Ruins and Leopard Leg - apt comparisons considering their group ensemble ethic and circular pattern performance setup.
